Buy directly in ChatGPT: Instant Checkout and the Agentic Commerce Protocol

OpenAI has introduced Instant Checkout, a feature that lets users purchase products without leaving the ChatGPT chat window. It is currently available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and free users in the US for purchasing products sold on Etsy, and will soon expand to Shopify merchants.

When a user asks for product recommendations, ChatGPT organically surfaces relevant products. If a product supports Instant Checkout, the user can tap the 'Buy' button to review shipping and payment information and complete the purchase instantly within the chat window. Existing subscribers can use a saved card or other convenient payment options.

At the core of this feature is the Agentic Commerce Protocol, an open-source standard co-developed with Stripe. This protocol is an open standard for AI commerce designed to let AI agents, users, and businesses work together to complete purchases.
