Building an Age Prediction System

OpenAI is building a long-term system to identify users' ages and optimize the ChatGPT experience accordingly, for the safety of teenage users.

Through the age prediction system, when a user is confirmed to be under 18, age-appropriate policies such as blocking explicit content are automatically applied. If age verification is uncertain or information is insufficient, the system defaults to under-18 mode for safety.

Starting later this month, the following Parental controls features will be introduced to help families guide ChatGPT usage:

• Account linking (minimum age 13)
• Setting teen-tailored model behavior rules
• Managing specific features such as memory and chat history
• Providing alerts when signs of acute psychological distress in teens are detected
• Blackout hours setting feature

OpenAI also plans to continue strengthening various protective measures for users, such as in-app notifications encouraging breaks during extended usage.
