Introducing Stargate Norway

As part of the 'OpenAI for Countries' program, OpenAI is launching Stargate Norway, its first AI data center initiative in Europe. This is a core project of Stargate, OpenAI's long-term infrastructure platform.

The project is a 50:50 joint investment between AI infrastructure provider Nscale and energy company Aker. It plans to leverage the abundant hydropower, low-cost energy, and cooling-friendly climate of the Narvik region in Norway to provide large-scale, sustainable AI capacity.

Key plans and features are as follows:

• Plans for 230MW of capacity, with a goal of an additional 290MW expansion in the future.
• 100,000 NVIDIA GPUs are to be deployed by the end of 2026.
• Only renewable energy will be used, and direct-to-chip liquid cooling technology will be introduced to maximize cooling efficiency.
• Waste heat generated from the system will be used to support local low-carbon businesses.

The built infrastructure will give priority to local Norwegian AI startups and researchers, while remaining capacity will be used to meet demand across the UK and the Nordic region, accelerating the development of Europe's AI ecosystem.
