Meta Gets Data Center Incentives in Louisiana

With approximately $700 billion expected to be invested this year alone in data center construction for AI infrastructure, concerns are being raised about the massive public costs involved.

At least 36 states in the US are offering tax incentives to data center development companies, with major examples as follows:

• Virginia: $1.9 billion annually
• Georgia: $2.6 billion annually
• Texas: over $1 billion annually (a 567% increase year-over-year)

In particular, the state of Louisiana plans to provide $3.3 billion in tax incentives for the $10 billion 'Hyperion' data center being built by Meta. This exceeds 7 years' worth of Louisiana's entire police budget.

Policy experts are criticizing these massive subsidies as unnecessary public investment given that the AI industry is already growing rapidly.
