Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta Warn Against Overregulation of Open-Weight Models

Over 25 tech companies including Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, and Palantir have released a joint letter urging policymakers to avoid hasty regulation of open-weight AI models. They warned that excessive regulation could stifle competition and push innovation overseas.

Recently, as China's Moonshot AI released Kimi K3, a model that outperforms models from US companies, discussions about restricting access to Chinese open-weight models within the US have been accelerating. In response, the companies participating in the letter argued that open-weight models strengthen competition rather than concentrating the benefits of the technology among a select few.

On the other hand, OpenAI and Anthropic did not participate in this letter. Both companies primarily develop closed models and are known to be currently preparing for large-scale IPOs. However, OpenAI's President Greg Brockman stated his view that the democratization of AI and the existence of diverse models are positive.
