AI Writing Preferred Over Human Writing

Researchers at Villanova University had over 1,600 participants evaluate three human-written short stories and three short stories generated by ChatGPT. The results showed that participants gave higher quality and immersion scores to AI works when they believed the AI works were written by humans.

Participants tended to prefer the clarity and predictability of AI writing, and readers familiar with specific stylistic patterns were better able to distinguish whether content was AI-generated. The researchers analyzed that AI literacy could become important for understanding and identifying AI-generated content.

The study results suggest that the existing public perception that unique human traits such as emotional understanding are essential for creative writing may conflict with actual reader evaluations.
