From Questions to Execution: How the World Uses ChatGPT

OpenAI has released country-specific ChatGPT usage data for the first time. The data shows that people are moving beyond using ChatGPT merely as a tool for asking questions and getting answers, toward using it as a tool for performing actual tasks and creating deliverables.

In work environments, usage for doing tasks such as writing, editing, coding, and analysis was more than twice as high as in non-work environments. Conversely, in non-work usage, asking for information and explanations still accounted for the largest share.

The gap in per-capita usage across countries is also narrowing. In Q2 2026, usage in parts of Latin America, Oceania, and Africa increased rapidly, with Peru, Uruguay, and Costa Rica showing the largest rises in rankings.

Multimedia generation, analysis, and search were the fastest-growing use cases globally, accounting for 7.8% of all messages. In some countries, such as Brazil and Colombia, multimedia-related messages exceeded 10%.

The share of users over 35 years old also increased in nearly all countries. In France and the Czech Republic, this age group's share of total messages increased by more than 10 percentage points over the past year.

This OpenAI Signals data is based on messages sent from ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro accounts, rather than organizational accounts.
