Smart Promotion System: An Innovation Story in Automating Member Tier Upgrades

Oliveyoung carried out a technological innovation to resolve the inefficiency of the member tier upgrade task, which is conducted twice a year for approximately 14 million customers on a massive scale.

Previously, developers manually updated and validated online and offline DBs directly using PL-SQL. This process consumed a great deal of human resources, and due to a throughput limitation of about 30,000 transactions per minute when linking data through Oracle GoldenGate, data synchronization took over 9 hours.

To resolve this, Oliveyoung achieved the following technical improvements.

• Introduction of AWS Batch: Automated the manual DML operations and validation process to prevent human error, and built a real-time monitoring system via Slack webhooks.
• Introduction of Apache Kafka: Replaced the existing Oracle GoldenGate with Apache Kafka as the data synchronization engine, raising throughput per minute to over 100,000 transactions.

As a result, the data linkage time to the marketing system was reduced from 9 hours 41 minutes to 58 minutes, a cut of over about 90%, securing both stability and efficiency in large-scale data processing.
