Meta Conducts Massive Layoffs to Focus on AI

Meta laid off 8,000 employees (about 10% of its total workforce). In a memo announced Wednesday, CEO Mark Zuckerberg justified the restructuring by saying that in the AI race, "success is not guaranteed."

As part of this restructuring, 7,000 employees were reassigned to AI-focused work. In the memo, Zuckerberg emphasized that "AI is the most important technology of our time" and that "the leading companies will define the next generation."

Unlike the first round of mass layoffs in 2022, when he teared up and acknowledged mistakes, this memo struck a cold tone that emphasized the urgency of the AI race. Meta stated there will be no further company-wide layoffs this year.
