AWS Weekly News: EC2 Application Status Checks, IAM Role Manager, OpenAI Daybreak on Amazon Bedrock, and More (August 17, 2026)

AWS is strengthening its collaboration with the OpenSearch and Valkey communities to support the open-source ecosystem. OpenSearch 3.7 improves vector search performance by up to 5.5x and is available in Amazon OpenSearch Service. Valkey 9.1 improves throughput by 17% and is offered in Amazon ElastiCache.

Key new features include Amazon EC2 application status checks, which allow detection of application-level issues such as web server downtime or Docker daemon failures. Additionally, the AWS IAM role manager simplifies configuration by automatically creating IAM roles for supported services or reusing existing roles.

Amazon Bedrock now offers Daybreak, OpenAI's cyber defense initiative. Daybreak Blue (based on GPT-5.6 Sol) is specialized for defensive workflows, while Daybreak Red (based on GPT-5.6 Cyber) is specialized for advanced tasks such as vulnerability research.

Amazon SageMaker JumpStart has added various foundation models, including NVIDIA's Nemotron series, Google's gemma-4-12B-it, and Black Forest Labs' FLUX.2. Meanwhile, AWS Certificate Manager (ACM) will discontinue support for email validation by September 30, 2027, requiring a transition to DNS validation.
