Meta Launches AI Desktop App for macOS with Screen Sharing Support

Meta has officially launched a dedicated Meta AI desktop app for macOS. Announced on August 19, this update introduces screen sharing and system-wide voice input as key desktop features.

While maintaining an interface similar to the web version, desktop integration allows users to attach specific screens or windows directly from the prompt bar to use as context. It also supports a system-wide shortcut to summon a compact Meta AI prompt bar from anywhere in macOS.

The voice input feature is based on existing speech recognition technologies already released by Meta, such as Omnilingual ASR, and could serve as a consumer-facing touchpoint for new voice technologies in the future. The currently released build is version 1.0, moving beyond the initial prototype stage.

However, challenges remain in closing the desktop ecosystem gap compared to competitors like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. While Artifacts are supported, deep coding workflow integration comparable to ChatGPT or Claude is lacking. Additionally, browser usage and computer-use capabilities remain significant missing features in the consumer desktop app.
