Upstage Achieves Top Performance Among Korean Companies at RecSys 2022

Upstage placed 12th overall at the ACM RecSys Challenge 2022, hosted by the world's most authoritative academic conference in the field of recommendation systems. This was the highest result among Korean companies, trailing 1st place by just 0.016 points.

The competition was a personalized fashion recommendation task using data from the fashion personalization AI solution Dressipi, with over 350 teams competing worldwide. First place went to Xiaohongshu (RED), China's largest commerce company, and Upstage's Challengers team and Recommendation team achieved results on par with global big tech companies.

Instead of first selecting candidate items and then ranking within them, Upstage improved performance using a Transformer-based model that tracks relationships in sequential data and learns context. The team differentiated its approach by identifying relationships between click histories to directly generate products a user is likely to purchase, and this achievement once again demonstrated Upstage's AI Seargest (search+suggest) capabilities.
