Upstage and Chosun Ilbo

Upstage has signed a joint agreement with Chosun Ilbo, marking the first time in Korea that a major AI company and a major news organization will jointly develop and deploy commercial media-specialized AI solutions.

Chosun Ilbo plans to introduce AI across the entire process of newspaper and digital news production, and Upstage will develop media-dedicated AI services based on its own LLM, SOLAR. The training data will draw on 105 years of coverage comprising more than 4.1 million articles, a person database of about 350,000 individuals, and English- and Japanese-language news archives.

The first output will be Proofreading AI, set to launch in the first half of this year. This tool catches typos and sentence errors with over 95% accuracy, and also supports fixing awkward phrasing, recommending contextually appropriate vocabulary, maintaining consistent style and tone, removing redundant expressions, improving sentence flow, and detecting factual inconsistencies by cross-checking against reliable data sources.

This partnership is expected to expand beyond automating proofreading work to news organizations, publishers, government agencies, public institutions, research institutes, and companies. Going forward, the two plan to jointly develop automatic translation, RAG-based information retrieval, news fact-checking, and automatic article generation based on editorial guidelines.
