Claude Memory Persists After Conversation Deletion

It has been confirmed that Anthropic's Claude memory feature does not delete memory items derived from a conversation when that conversation is deleted.

Memories are stored as editable topics accessible via Settings > Memory and function consistently across Chat and Cowork in cloud environments. By default, the feature is enabled for Free, Pro, and Max plans, while it is disabled for Team and Enterprise plans.

Key Policies and Precautions:

• Exclusion of Sensitive Information: Sensitive topics such as health, race, religion, politics, and gender identity are not stored unless the user explicitly opts in.
• Items Never Stored: Government IDs, criminal records, financial account numbers, and immigration status are never stored, regardless of settings.
• Deletion Limitations: While chat conversations can be deleted, memories generated from them must be deleted individually.
• Management Permissions: The Team plan lacks organization-level management features, requiring each member to manage their own settings. For Enterprise, disabling the feature via central admin control results in the immediate and permanent deletion of all users' memories.
