Cloudflare Reveals 2024 Summer Intern Projects, Including Workers AI and D1 Improvements

Cloudflare has revealed the outcomes of projects involving approximately 60 interns during the summer of 2024. The interns contributed to the development of core product lines such as Workers AI, D1, and Zero Trust, as well as the creation of internal tools.

Key Technical Projects

The interns implemented various features using Cloudflare's developer platform.

• Workers AI: Jessica developed a threads API that automatically recalls past messages during inference, supporting the construction of personalized chatbots. Dhravya launched function calling capabilities, allowing LLMs to dynamically perform tasks or retrieve data.
• D1: Shaheen and Anantharaman improved D1's usability through billing observability, dashboards, and Wrangler command enhancements, and launched billing alerts and audit log features.
• Zero Trust: Jada developed the Policy Tester feature, which shows policy update statistics to customers, utilizing Durable Objects as a RESTful API for this purpose.
• WAF: Prajjwal experimented with zero-shot learning techniques to advance new attack detection and personalize WAF attack scores.

Internal Efficiency and Security

Beyond technical development, work was conducted to improve operational efficiency and strengthen security.

• Rahul built an automated grading system for intern support tasks using Cloudflare Access, Browser Rendering, D1, R2, and Workers.
• Utkarsh created a network infrastructure simulation tool to improve server provisioning efficiency.
• Anshika performed SOX and ISO tests and data center audits, supporting the automation of SOC 2 testing.
• Megan managed the transition to internal security access tools, ensuring user group consistency.

Offline Activities and Culture

For the first time since the pandemic, more than half of the interns worked in-person at the Austin, Lisbon, and London offices. Interns in Austin volunteered at the Central Texas Food Bank, preparing 9,000 meals, and interacted through team-building activities such as ping-pong tournaments and game shows.
