Maryland State and Anthropic's AI Partnership

Maryland State announced it will adopt Anthropic's advanced AI model, Claude, to improve government operations and service delivery for more than 6 million residents. Through this partnership, Claude will be deployed across multiple state agencies to address the following priority tasks.

• Connecting Residents to Benefits: Claude-powered virtual assistants will help residents apply for essential benefits such as SNAP, Medicaid, and WIC, while also identifying and connecting them to additional support programs they may be missing.
• Supporting Case Managers: To improve the manual processing of more than 150,000 documents per month, Claude will be used to quickly and accurately handle document verification, eligibility checks, and policy guidance for complex cases.
• Workforce Upskilling and Community Support: The state will run AI upskilling pilot programs for early-career professionals in key industries, and will also collaborate on developing tools to identify unmet community needs (such as fresh food and childcare).

This collaboration builds on the success of the bilingual chatbot Maryland launched in June for SUN Bucks benefit recipients. Maryland plans to leverage Anthropic's capabilities in secure AI deployment to turn its AI governance principles into concrete public service innovations.
