Anthropic Appoints National Security Expert Richard Fontaine to Long-Term Benefit Trust

Anthropic's Long-Term Benefit Trust (LTBT) has appointed national security expert Richard Fontaine as a new trustee. Fontaine is CEO of the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) and has extensive government experience, including at the National Security Council (NSC), the State Department, and Congress.

The appointment comes as advanced AI systems have a growing impact on national security, aiming to manage the intersection between AI capabilities and geopolitical risk. Buddy Shah, Chair of the LTBT, said Fontaine's experience will provide an important perspective for addressing the complex challenges that increasingly powerful AI poses to global security.

The LTBT is an independent body that helps Anthropic, as a Public Benefit Corporation, achieve a safe transition to advanced AI. Its key roles include:

• Selecting members of Anthropic's Board of Directors
• Advising the board and management on maximizing AI's benefits and mitigating its risks

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei emphasized that it is essential for democratic nations to lead in responsible AI development for global security and the public good, and stressed that this appointment will support the complex decision-making that will determine the global balance of power.
