Meta Agrees to Deploy 1GW of Custom AI Chips with Broadcom... Hock Tan to Leave Board

Meta and Broadcom will extend their existing partnership through 2029, jointly designing, packaging, and networking Meta's own AI accelerator, MTIA.

Meta plans to first deploy 1 gigawatt of Training and Inference Accelerators, and later expand Broadcom technology-based chips to multiple gigawatts. Broadcom said this chip will be the first AI silicon to use a 2 nanometer process.

Alongside this announcement, Broadcom CEO Hock Tan is stepping down from Meta's board. Tan joined the board in 2024, and Meta also said another director, Tracey Travis, is departing as well.

Meta has recently been significantly accelerating its pace of AI investment. After announcing it would spend up to $135 billion on AI this year, it has been signing a series of supply agreements, including up to 6 gigawatts of AMD GPUs, millions of Nvidia chips, and Arm-based custom chips.
