OpenAI Expands Support for Journalism Ecosystem… Providing AI Tools and Education to Universities and News Organizations

On September 8, 2026, OpenAI announced a multifaceted initiative to support the entire journalism ecosystem, from students to news organizations. This measure includes ChatGPT Edu subscriptions, API credits, educational programs, and strategic partnerships, aiming to leverage AI for public record analysis, data pattern discovery, and improved reader experiences.

Strengthening University Partnerships and Education

OpenAI selected the Tow-Knight Center at CUNY Newmark J-School and the Knight Lab at Northwestern University Medill School as its first partners. Starting in the 2026-2027 academic year, it will provide more than 400 ChatGPT Edu subscriptions to graduate students and faculty at these institutions. This allows students to learn about the limitations and ethical use of AI, while gaining opportunities to explore deeper investigations and new storytelling formats while preserving human judgment.

Expanding News Organization and Global Collaboration

OpenAI is expanding existing partnerships to support AI adoption in real newsrooms.

• American Journalism Project (AJP): Providing ChatGPT enterprise and API credits to more than 50 news organizations in its portfolio, and sharing reusable tools and playbooks.
• Lenfest Institute: Supporting the hiring of AI engineering fellows for local news organizations to advance public data reporting and revenue growth projects.
• WAN-IFRA: Supporting training and API credits for more than 165 newsrooms in Europe, Asia-Pacific, and other regions through the Newsroom AI Catalyst accelerator program.
• INMA: Helping establish AI strategies through discussions and webinars with global news organization leaders.

Expanding Community Engagement and Learning Hubs

OpenAI will provide training for journalists and educators at major journalism conferences in 2026 (such as NABJ and NAHJ). Based on these engagements, it will expand the OpenAI Academy for News Organizations, featuring practical training and newsroom use cases. Beyond simple technology access, OpenAI plans to continuously develop tools and educational resources based on the actual needs of the news industry.
