Vercel has introduced Flat Rate CDN for Pro teams, addressing the unpredictability of traditional usage-based billing. This prevents unexpected high bills caused by viral launches or traffic spikes, allowing users to select CDN capacity at a fixed monthly rate.

Fixed Pricing and Performance Maintenance

Flat Rate CDN includes CDN Requests, Fast Data Transfer, and Blob Data Transfer, with no overages incurred due to temporary spikes. Vercel provides a premium network based on private fiber that bypasses public internet congestion by default, guaranteeing up to 60% performance improvement without degradation even during traffic surges.

Differentiation from Other Infrastructure

Existing infrastructure providers apply caps that reject requests or degrade performance when capacity is reached. In contrast, Vercel ensures flexibility through two methods:

• Spike Exclusion: Temporary usage surges are recognized and excluded during capacity evaluation.
• Automatic Right-sizing: The Flat Rate CDN tier is automatically rightsized monthly based on sustained usage.

Adoption Benefits and Implementation

In real-world cases, viral traffic situations that could have resulted in bills of tens of thousands of dollars under usage-based billing were maintained at a fixed cost of $20 per month with Flat Rate CDN. New Pro teams are enabled by default, while existing Pro teams can manually opt-in via the Billing menu. This allows developers to reduce cost burdens when implementing caching strategies and significantly lower the monitoring burden for bot traffic, such as AI crawlers.
