Verb AI Case Study

Verb is an AI writing tool that helps writers finish long-form narratives, especially novels, faster and more easily. It uses AI21 Studio as its core model to support the entire process from brainstorming to writing to editing.

• Plot brainstorming: It suggests what happens next at the scene and chapter level, and users can adopt the idea or press What happens next to explore more options.
• Literary language: Ryan Bowman explained that what matters to novelists is not simple text generation but a narrative, literary tone, and that AI21 fit that need.
• Tuning based on human evaluation: Multiple professional writers compared and evaluated thousands of passages to build up preferences, and the model was continuously improved based on the results. The team described this as effectively teaching the model literary theory.

In the early alpha version, the more writers used the AI features, the higher their return and writing persistence rates were, and around a dozen writers actually finished writing their books. Verb launched its beta in late December 2022, and plans to expand into screenwriting and TV and film going forward.
