Microsoft Reimagines Copilot with New Home, Code, and Autopilot Features

Microsoft has officially reimagined its Copilot platform, introducing three core capabilities—Home, Code, and Autopilot—to unify chat, delegation, and autonomous work. The update aims to embed AI directly into the flow of work by integrating the full functionality of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint into the Copilot interface, eliminating the need to switch between apps for document creation and editing.

New Core Capabilities

• Home: Serves as the central starting point where Chat (for quick queries) and Cowork (for delegated, end-to-end tasks) converge. It provides a unified view of recent activity and suggestions.
• Code: Moves solution-building outside the realm of developers alone, allowing users to create small, purpose-built solutions like dashboards and internal apps using natural language. Powered by the same technology as GitHub Copilot, it runs in a secure, sandboxed environment within the user's tenant.
• Autopilot: Formerly called Scout, this is a persistent, cloud-hosted AI agent that operates independently. It can manage recurring tasks, follow up on threads, and execute complex workflows like supplier reviews without constant monitoring.

Infrastructure and Business Context

To support these new capabilities, Microsoft introduced Microsoft Copilot Managed Runtime, hosting infrastructure that allows code to run safely inside a company’s Microsoft 365 environment. The platform is grounded in Microsoft IQ, which now incorporates data from Fabric IQ (including 20+ million Power BI semantic models) and Dynamics 365 workflows, enabling Copilot to reference business data like deal history and support tickets directly in documents.

Pricing and Availability

Microsoft is distinguishing between everyday AI and agentic work in its pricing model:

• User Subscription License (USL): Covers everyday AI tasks like quick answers and drafts in Chat and Office apps, using Auto to route requests to the best model for accuracy, speed, and cost.
• Usage-Based Billing (UBB): Applies to agentic work, including Cowork, Code, and Autopilot, as well as frontier models like Astra and Fable, allowing users to choose models and match cost to value.

Availability: Home is rolling out through the Frontier program in the coming weeks. Code is rolling out to Frontier at the end of the month, with broad availability in the coming weeks and preview access for Microsoft 365 Premium and Pro subscribers later this year. Autopilot is available within the tenant environment as described.
