Meta Signals Open-Source Release of Next-Generation AI Model

Meta is preparing a next-generation AI model family that differs from the existing Llama series.

Unlike the previous approach of releasing full weights, this model adopts a method of releasing only some components under open-source licenses. It employs a 'hedge strategy' that keeps the most powerful model private, while deciding whether to release the remaining parts after safety review. This is seen as an attempt to secure a developer ecosystem while protecting core competitiveness.

Meta's key strategic directions are as follows.

• Consumer-focused deployment: Unlike OpenAI or Anthropic, which focus on enterprise and government customers, Meta plans to deploy AI at scale in the consumer space through its own platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram.
• Alignment with industry trends: Similar to Alibaba's recent adoption of a proprietary license for its Qwen model, Meta is joining the trend of gradually closing off models in order to maintain the performance of powerful models.
