Google Testing Jules V2 Agent for Larger-Scale Tasks

Google is developing a next-generation coding agent called Jules V2 (internal codename Jitro), preparing a paradigm shift in software engineering tools. Moving away from the existing 'enter a prompt, then execute' model, the agent will judge for itself what needs to be changed in the codebase based on high-level goals (such as KPIs) set by the developer.

This is a point of differentiation from GitHub Copilot, Cursor, and OpenAI's Codex, which require defining specific task-level units. Google envisions Jitro not as a one-off tool, but as a dedicated workspace-based partner that collaborates continuously.

The key features of Jitro are as follows:

• Supporting high-quality goal-setting and generating concrete, actionable tasks

This update is likely to be unveiled around the time of Google I/O 2026. It is expected to support outcome-driven development for enterprise teams in combination with the Gemini ecosystem, but building trust regarding the unpredictable changes that may arise during the process of autonomously carrying out goals is expected to be a major challenge.
