Memory Is Purpose

If LLMs achieved intelligence by compressing the internet's vast data into weights, AI agents need a new form of memory that compresses work into state.

Simply storing and retrieving information is nothing more than 'Knowledge.' True Memory in its real sense is the process of determining, according to a specific Purpose, which parts of past data are useful enough to change future actions. In other words, memory is a 'retained consequence.'

For example, a rock by the roadside becomes a chair to a hiker, and a sample to a geologist. The rock itself hasn't changed, but as the observer's utility function—their purpose—changes, the meaning of the rock changes as well.

The same applies in enterprise settings. A single customer email might be a 'renewal signal' to the sales team, but a 'technical constraint' to the engineering team. Therefore, an agent's memory is not simply about accumulating data—the key capability is managing State according to the purpose of each role and workflow.
