Powering Data Centers from the Ocean

Panthalassa has unveiled a concept that generates electricity from wave energy and uses that power to float an AI data center on the ocean.

CEO Garth Sheldon-Coulson described Ocean-2 as a device that moves up and down with the waves, pushing water up to spin a turbine, and said the latest design, Ocean-3, is a self-propelled system with no anchor or cables.

• Computation is processed on the ocean, and results are transmitted via satellite.
• The company has secured the necessary private funding, and construction is already underway.
• Ocean-3 is expected to begin operating at sea around August.

The company believes this approach could be an alternative to land-based data centers in terms of being fuel-free, requiring no land use, and offering rapid scalability. In the long term, it has also presented plans to deploy thousands of units far out at sea.
