Kakao Shares Onboarding Review of 2020 New Developers After Six Months

Kakao released interviews with three new developers (Albus, David, Tate) who joined in 2020, six months after their onboarding. They shared their adaptation process in a remote work environment and their experience acquiring practical skills.

Adapting to Remote Work and Collaboration

The immediate introduction of remote work upon joining caused difficulties in understanding tasks and communication. Albus stated that although there was initial confusion in setting work directions, he adapted thanks to a culture that encourages asking questions without fear. David said that daily Q&A sessions with his buddy and video meetings with team members were greatly helpful. Tate evaluated that internal documentation and collaboration tools such as Jira and GitHub contributed to lowering the barriers of remote work.

Technical Learning and Practical Growth

Each learned core technologies in their respective positions. David intensively studied Kotlin for Android development, while Tate broadened his understanding of service stability and monitoring solutions through developing internal infrastructure systems. Albus, who took charge of developing the Talk Drawer server, mentioned that his code comprehension and development speed improved noticeably.

Psychological Changes and Advice

Pre-hire anxiety transformed into confidence. David said that 'going to work' became natural and he gained confidence in his ability to solve assigned tasks. Tate revealed that he escaped the pressure of student life and gained the freedom to use time proactively and work on personal projects. They advised candidates for the 2021 new graduate recruitment that confidence and communication skills in interviews are more important than coding test proficiency.
