Working with Codex

When you open Codex, you first see the sidebar menu, projects, settings, and chat window. A new thread can be tied to an existing project, made into a new project, or left as a standalone conversation. Think of a thread like a chat in ChatGPT.

• The Sidebar menu is the central space for moving between thread, project, and tool. Use Search to find previous work, and Plugins to attach repeatable task procedures or connect other tools.
• Projects are units linked to a working folder. When dealing with a different set of files, create a new project, and for local work, files outside that folder are not touched. A new project can be started even if the folder is empty.
• In Settings, you adjust permissions, personalization, and whether work continues after your computer goes to sleep. Long-running tasks can stop when the computer sleeps, so this setting should be checked in advance.

In the Chat window, you write in natural language the result you want, the files to use, and the completion criteria. Codex can inspect files, create new files, edit documents, organize information, and even carry out actual implementation.

If you missed a requirement, there's no need to start over. Enter a new instruction and select Steer to fix work in progress, and you can also run multiple threads at once to process different tasks in parallel.
