OpenAI Introduces Apps in ChatGPT and Unveils New Apps SDK

A new generation of Apps that can be used directly through conversation within ChatGPT is being introduced. Users can be recommended an app at the appropriate moment during a conversation, or invoke an app directly by name. Apps not only understand natural language but also provide conversational interfaces such as maps, playlists, and presentations, expanding the user experience.

An Apps SDK for developers has also been released in preview form. This SDK is designed as an open standard based on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), allowing developers to design an app's logic and interface themselves and connect it to their existing backend to offer premium features. The SDK is provided as open source, so apps can run anywhere that adopts the standard.

Apps from major partners including Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Figma, Expedia, Spotify, Zillow are currently being made available first. Apps are available to ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro plan users (excluding EEA, Switzerland, and the UK), while business customers (Business, Enterprise, Edu) can access them through preview.
