ChatGPT and Whisper APIs Launched

OpenAI has released the GPT-3.5 Turbo and Whisper models as APIs, allowing developers to integrate state-of-the-art language and speech-to-text capabilities into their own apps and products.

Cost efficiency has improved significantly. The ChatGPT API has achieved a 90% cost reduction since last December, and this has been passed directly on to API users. In addition, the open source model Whisper large-v2 is now available via the API, making it faster and cheaper to use.

Key early adoption cases are as follows:

• Snap Inc: Applied the GPT-3.5 API to 'My AI', the custom chatbot for Snapchat+
• Quizlet: Introduced 'Q-Chat', a personalized AI tutor for learners
• Instacart: Preparing an 'Ask Instacart' feature that answers shopping questions
• Shopify: Using the GPT-3.5 API for its shopping assistant
• Speak: Offering an AI conversation partner service using the Whisper API

The GPT-3.5 Turbo model is priced at $0.002 per 1,000 tokens, 10x cheaper than the existing model. This model supports a new Chat Markup Language (ChatML) format that processes messages together with metadata, enabling more sophisticated conversational interfaces.
