Catching Instead of Patriot

Ukraine's Ministry of Defense approved the JEDI Shahed Hunter for combat use on March 23, 2026. This drone is a VTOL quadcopter weighing about 4kg, carrying a 500g warhead, and flying at over 350km/h.

The core of the article is cost-effectiveness. JEDI's per-unit price hasn't been disclosed, but according to the Brave1 public catalog, package pricing is introduced at around 3,357,000–4,357,000 UAH. In the same context, other Ukrainian interceptor drones are mentioned at around $1,000–$2,500, contrasted with the cost of a single Patriot missile, which runs into millions of dollars.

However, this system isn't a cure-all. Russia is evolving Shaheds with low-altitude flight, rear-facing cameras, and passive radar guidance, so JEDI also needs a shorter detect-to-intercept loop and automation integration. Ukraine is already rapidly expanding a multi-layered air defense system alongside other interceptors: Sting, P1-SUN, and Shvidun.
