Upstage's Document AI achieves results in Samsung Life supply
Key point
Upstage's Document AI achieved a 95% OCR accuracy rate on Samsung Life insurance documents.
Details
Upstage's finance-specialized AI OCR solution Document AI, supplied to Samsung Life, recorded an average recognition rate of 95% or higher in verification of 7 types of insurance claim documents. This far exceeded the original target of 90%, proving that document automation is also possible in the insurance industry.
Insurance documents have extremely high OCR difficulty because forms differ by hospital and contain a lot of handwriting and unstructured data. Nevertheless, in this test, items requiring human correction were limited to around 4%, confirming that a substantial degree of automation is achievable.
Key details are as follows.
- Verification targeting 7 types of insurance claim documents, including medical expense receipts
- Average recognition rate of 95%, exceeding the target of 90%
- Additional training with Samsung Life data was applied only to pharmaceutical expense receipts
- The remaining 6 types were processed using only the base model
- High accuracy recognition even for images with tilting, wrinkling, and shading
Upstage explained that its pretrained model-based architecture allows it to process various documents with only a small amount of additional data. This achievement is seen as expanding the possibility of adopting AI OCR not only in insurance but also in the broader financial sector as well as other industries such as trade, distribution, and education.
Samsung Life stated that by adopting Document AI, it has automated the entire process from data entry to review and claim payment, building an environment capable of rapid payment even amid a surge in claims. Upstage plans to expand cooperation with Samsung Life going forward and further broaden the areas where OCR is applied.
