Upstage's 10th Kaggle Gold Medal

Upstage placed 8th overall in the Kaggle Learning Agency Lab - Automated Essay Scoring competition hosted by Georgia State University, earning its second gold medal this year and 10th gold medal since its founding. With this achievement, Upstage became the first Korean company to reach double-digit gold medals on Kaggle.

The competition evaluated the consistency of models classifying paragraphs from over 10,000 essays written by middle and high school students into 7 structures: topic, position, claim and counterclaim, rebuttal, argumentation, and conclusion. Upstage's Challengers Team members Wonho Song, Hyunbyung Park, and Ikhyo Jung, all Masters, advanced the natural language processing model and strengthened its word-order recognition capability to improve performance in analyzing long sentences.

They also improved evaluation consistency by restricting certain structures—such as introduction, position, and conclusion—to appear only once in an essay. The company emphasized that this achievement was the result of talent nurtured through its Global Residency program, noting that both Grandmaster Yoonsoo Kim, who won a gold medal earlier this year, and this round's winners all went through the program.

Beyond its Kaggle achievements, Upstage has also demonstrated its technical capabilities through papers presented at international conferences such as NeurIPS, AAAI, ACL, and EMNLP, and plans to launch AI Pack in the second half of this year based on this expertise. AI Pack is a one-stop solution that provides OCR, semantic search, and recommendation technology all at once, enabling customers to continuously leverage the latest AI technology even after completing data processing and modeling.
