Professor Sung Kim has founded Upstage, a startup to accelerate AI transformation for enterprises. Upstage identifies areas within a company's operations that can be innovated with AI, and provides base AI models, system builds, and consulting.

The company also said it will support the cultivation of AI talent within client organizations to strengthen their own capabilities, aiming to develop specialists who can be deployed immediately in the field through hands-on and foundational training. It further plans to help companies design their AI teams.

Upon founding, domestic financial institutions and major telecom companies reportedly showed interest in the solution and began discussions. CEO Sung Kim, during his time as a professor at HKUST, conducted convergence research in software engineering and machine learning, winning 4 paper awards and the ICSME Most Influential Paper Award, and his lecture series 'Deep Learning for Everyone' has recorded over 6 million views.

Upstage's team includes Sung Kim, who previously headed Naver Clova AI; Jaebum Kim, former AI team lead at Kakao; Hwalsuk Lee from Naver's Visual AI/OCR team; Eunjeong Park from the Papago model team; Sanghoon Kim, ranked 12th on Kaggle; and Haein Son, formerly in charge of AI education and developer marketing at NVIDIA. Professor Kyunghyun Cho of NYU and Professor Lei Chen of HKUST are also participating, and the company plans to continue actively recruiting top AI talent.
