Upstage Launches Solar Mini on AWS

Upstage has launched Solar Mini on AWS. Developers can use it right away via pre-built foundation models on Amazon SageMaker JumpStart and through AWS Marketplace.

The model broadly supports text understanding, summarization, translation, and content generation in Korean and English, with support for Thai and Japanese set to be added soon.

Its key advantage is cost efficiency.

• With 10.7 billion parameters, it can handle inference at lower cost than larger models.
• Since it is a pre-trained model, there's no need to build a model from scratch—only fine-tuning with domain data is required.
• Upstage stated that it trained the model using AWS SageMaker, and improved cultural understanding and factual accuracy through data preprocessing, fine-tuning, and RAG.

Solar Mini ranked first among open-source large SLMs on the Hugging Face Open LLM Leaderboard in December 2023. Upstage and AWS emphasized that this launch will make it easier for enterprises to adopt generative AI at the local level.
