ByteDance Begins Developing Its Own CPU Amid Processor Supply Delays

ByteDance is developing its own CPU to strengthen its AI infrastructure. This move is aimed at responding to the surging demand for silicon in the AI industry and resolving uncertainties in the existing processor supply chain.

The company is currently reviewing two architectures: Arm and RISC-V. Arm offers a proprietary ISA, while RISC-V is characterized as a royalty-free open source architecture.

This decision comes in response to long lead times from Intel and AMD as well as memory supply shortages. In particular, as processor supply in the Chinese market has become more difficult, the need to secure in-house hardware has grown.

The developed chip is expected to be deployed in AI data centers and servers to support agentic AI products such as Coze. This aligns with the trend among big tech companies like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon to develop their own silicon.
