Codex for Almost Everything

OpenAI has significantly updated Codex, expanding the tool used by over 3 million developers weekly to cover the entire software development process. Codex no longer just writes code—it can now directly operate a computer, move between the web and apps, and even handle repetitive tasks.

With the background computer use feature, Codex can view other apps and click and type on a Mac, and multiple agents can work in parallel without interfering with each other. This lets developers use it for frontend fixes, app testing, and working within apps that lack an API.

An in-app browser for web tasks has also been added. You can leave comments directly on a page to give the agent precise instructions—currently especially useful for frontend and game development—and it will expand in the future to control the browser more broadly, beyond just localhost.

Image generation uses gpt-image-1.5, allowing you to create and iterate on product concepts, frontend designs, mockups, and visuals for games in the same flow alongside screenshots and code. On top of this, over 90 plugins have been added, connecting to tools like Atlassian Rovo, CircleCI, CodeRabbit, GitLab Issues, Microsoft Suite, Neon by Databricks, Remotion, Render, and Superpowers.

The app's own development workflow has also been strengthened. It now supports handling GitHub review comments, multiple terminal tabs, remote devbox connections via SSH (alpha), inline previews for PDFs, spreadsheets, slides, and documents, and a summary panel that tracks the agent's plan, sources, and artifacts.

Codex also handles tasks that unfold over time better. automations, which reuse existing conversation threads, have been expanded, and Codex can be scheduled to wake up later and continue long-running tasks. Additionally, a memory preview remembers preferences, corrections, and context gathered over time to speed up and improve the quality of future tasks, and Codex can proactively suggest what to start today or what to continue, based on projects, plugins, and memory.

This update is rolling out starting today to Codex desktop app users logged into ChatGPT. The personalization feature will soon be available to Enterprise, Edu, EU, and UK users, and computer use will launch first on macOS before expanding to the EU and UK as well.
