Google Reveals AI-Driven Acceleration in Genomic Mapping, Weather Forecasting, and Crisis Response

Google unveiled its latest achievements in using AI to accelerate scientific discovery and improve quality of life. First, AlphaGenome Atlas maps 9 billion genetic variants across the entire human genome for research purposes. In weather forecasting, the introduction of WeatherNext 3 combines real-time satellite observations with AI, improving the accuracy of precipitation forecasts issued more than one hour in advance by 50%. Additionally, the Planetary Prediction Engine (PPE) is being used to predict global crises; it identified 83% of hotspots in advance during an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and doubled the accuracy of food security predictions at the local level in Nigeria. In the United States, performance in identifying vulnerable populations across 21 CDC health indicators surpassed existing models. Regarding natural disaster response, it accurately predicted the path of Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica to support early preparedness, and issued warnings to millions of people before an earthquake occurred in Venezuela.
