Google Expands AI Technology to Understand Cultural Nuances Beyond Supporting 250+ Languages

Google is developing AI systems that go beyond simple translation to respect tone and cultural context. Currently, Google Translate supports over 250 languages, while Gemini 3.5 Live Translate performs real-time speech translation across 70 languages and more than 2,000 language pairs, capturing code-switching and emotional cues. Additionally, Gemini 3.5 Transcribe provides accurate speech-to-text conversion even in complex environments.

To support low-resource languages, Google has set a goal of supporting 1,000 major languages worldwide. It is leveraging the Universal Speech Model (USM), trained on 12 million hours of audio, to transfer learning knowledge from data-rich languages to low-resource ones. Through local partnerships, including WAXAL covering 27 African languages and Project Vaani covering 109 Indian languages, large-scale open datasets are also being built.

In terms of accessibility, Google is developing technologies usable in areas with unstable internet connections. The Sign Language-to-Text (SL2T) technology, which has learned over 50 sign languages, supports communication for sign language users.
